Aurom works
to ensure that the minimum amount of waste
occurs as a result of the recycling
of mobile handsets.
Telecommunications is one
of many growth areas of electronics, with
mobile phones playing a major role. Research
suggests that there are over 30 million
users in the UK today and it is predicted
that over half the population will own a
mobile phone by end of 2005.
What Happens To
The Handsets?
Aurom divide the phones
into three categories:
i) Phones that can be reused
- normally exported outside of Western Europe
Even though a piece of equipment has reached
the end of its life in one situation this
does not mean that it is no longer useable.
By this means the life of products can be
extended which is environmentally more desirable
than recycling them.
ii) Phones that can be
broken down for parts - separation of reusable
and recyclable components
iii) Remaining unsalvageable
parts that are sent for certified safe disposal.
Our licensed waste disposal is arranged
through Biffa Waste Services Limited, who
handle all destruction in accordance with
legislation set out in the EPA (Environmental
Pollution Act). Furthermore a Duty of Care
is issued as certification of secure and
safe disposal.
The disposal of electronic
appliances in landfill sites or through
incineration creates a number of environmental
problems such as:
1) The toxic content of
the rechargeable battery and other components
such as the LCD display.
2) The considerable amounts
of world resources which would be lost.
Recycling targets will
not bite in Europe until 2006 and from now
until then innovative and dynamic corporates
will be able to take advantage of this window
of opportunity.
